How to show, retrieve or recover hidden files or folder from Pen drive or USB drive?

Pen drives are most widely used external hardware devices for easy storage and transfer of files or folders. Sometimes users
may not be able to see files or folders stored on pen drives. This is because all the files or folders are in hidden mode, if the storage device doesn’t have these setting enabled or it could be due to undetected malware. Users may need to remove auto run files first and then proceed with removing the infected files using a recommended anti-malware.

Solution:

If you are not able to fix this issue even after scanning your pen drive by anti-virus application and enabling the hidden mode option on storage device, then better use the following below procedure:
  • Go to start> Control Panel> Tools> Folder options, select VIEW tab, select “Show hidden files, folders and drives” and uncheck “Hide protected operating system files (recommended)” now click APPLY or OK. ( Please see the images instructions)

  • Go to Start >  Run> Type CMD and Enter or
Open Command prompt (Win + R, type cmd, press enter), Find the drive letter for the connected USB drive. For Example, ‘H:’ as the affected drive, enter this command: attrib –h –r –s /s /d h:\*.* Replace ‘h:’ with other drive letter if needed.

Common scenarios:

  • You may hide some of your important files on other folder, but unfortunately you may delete that folder.
  • Sometimes you might hide essential files or folders on other folder and you may forget the location of the hidden files.
  • If you have malicious virus that infected your pen drive, then it will hide all your files or folders in the drive or creates shortcut icons.

 Precautions:

  • Don’t hide your important files in unwanted folder that is no longer available on your computer.
  • Install good anti-virus application to protect your computer and external storage devices from virus infection.
