celebration of Software. This Saturday, September 19th, is the twelfth annual Software Freedom Day, an international celebration of our favorite thing: free software!
The goal of this day is to educate the
worldwide public about good quality free and open source software (FOSS) in
education, at the government and in business. Teams of volunteers organize
every year worldwide in their local area activities to educate the public about
these technologies. Software Freedom Day's are being organized every year since
2004 and
was first observed on 28 August of that year. About 12 teams participated in
the first Software Freedom Day.
Since that time
it has grown in popularity and while organizers anticipated more than 1,000
teams in 2010 the event has stalled at around 400+ locations over the past two
years, representing a 30% decrease over 2009. Since 2006 Software Freedom Day
has been held on the third Saturday of September, it has occasionally coincided
with International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
As in past years, the Free Software Foundation
encourages the free software community to spend this holiday introducing a friend
to free software. Free software is worth celebrating every day, but we hope you
find a way to make Software Freedom Day 2015 extra special. Submit a bug
report, teach a friend, or spend some time hacking on your own free software.
As always; Happy Software Freedom Day!
